It’s fun to go back to the origin of words. How were they used “back when?” For example, why and how do we use the words “spell” and “spelling”?
Negative Words can Create a Crippling Spell
I started thinking about this in earnest several decades ago when a business coach strongly cautioned me to be very careful about the words I was using every day. She had me look up the origin of the word “spelling” to understand that for centuries humans have known the power of words.
I found out that our ancestors observed that words could cast spells. Spelling was using the power of words to create, to make something happen, and even to destroy. Today that understanding is hidden in plain sight.
That coach could see that one way of looking at my blocks to business success was that I was under the spell of lots of negativity. As she worked with me, she had observed that I constantly put myself down in conversations and that I was afraid to express my point-of-view, deferring to others constantly.
She helped me see that my speaking
negative words about myself–and even worse, to myself–hundreds of times a day, were a huge reason for my crippling lack of self-confidence even though I seemed to have everything going for me physically, mentally, and genetically.
I had supportive friends and extended family. Yet the spell I was under was more powerful than all that. I did my best, but my life didn’t change much even though I upped my use of affirmations.
I asked for others to give me feedback when they heard my words as negative. I started journaling to reflect whether I had been positive and to create awareness for the next day.
I Learned to Spell Better Through The MKE
But it wasn’t until I did the Master Key Experience (MKE) that I found totally effective ways of dealing with this cascade of a lifetime of negative words. We were quickly taught numerous tools that help.
So over a relatively short time my self-confidence went through the roof. I thought before I spoke to myself and to others. Positivity became a way of life. I had never been happier.
I went back to see what I had written about my spelling exerience in my MKE journal. This was already from Week Two:
1. Repeat Positive Words Frequently and with Feeling
“What’s really working this week is this immersion in thinking different thoughts with frequency and repetition in order to influence my subconscious. Yes, I feel like a juggler getting the right things done at the right time in the right way. But it’s already paying off.
“Words and phrases I’m reading and repeating are seeping into other parts of my day, and even into my dreams.
My mind must really love ‘Today I begin a new life,’ the beginning words of this month’s MKE scroll as well as ‘…today I am a new wo/man, with a new life,’ the concluding words, because now I hear them all the time through the day. They just have a way of making me stand tall and walk differently. How exciting that I’m believing it!
2. Become Aware Enough to See It and Change It
“The thing that has astonished me the most this week is feedback on the first draft of my Definite Major Purpose. A marketing coach had helped me put a lot of the thinking/wording together several years ago about my business WHY. But my MKE coach suggested I word my WHY less negatively.
“All these years I’ve known in one part of my brain that it’s not a good idea to name something with the name of the illness (MS Tools, Diabetes Support Group, etc.) because that focuses on and reinforces the illness.
“Instead we want to think about and name the tool and support group, something that focuses on independence or reinforces getting healthier.
“Yet that segment of my knowing hadn’t crossed over into how I explained what I’m doing in my business and life. So I’ve really been chewing on the negative wording, puzzling how to reframe it and rewrite it. And those questions, too, are seeping into my day and dreams as well. Exciting!”
So the MKE empowered me in two significant ways to use words and to better at spelling — emphasizing positive words and eliminating negative ones. I learned which personal words work to influence my subconscious and which don’t to bring my burning desires into reality.
I learned to speak the right kinds of words aloud with enthusiasm to influence my subconscious.
I steeped myself in the helpful words of Charles Haanel, Og Mandino, Napoleon Hill, Emerson, the Carpenter from Galilee and more — and made them mine with repetition and emphasis.
I did a 7-Day-Mental Diet and finally broke out of daily negative thinking and speaking as I immersed myself in positive thinking and positive words, my new spelling routine. And as you can see that started happening just in Week Two of the 26-week program!
And as MKE Guide, Day Boswell, explains in her recent blog [https://whoarethebestlifecoaches.com/thought-leader-become-that-authentic-expert-in-6-months/] you can go from improving your own words and spelling to becoming a thought leader for others, too!
You Can Improve Your Spelling Too!
I understand if up till now you have not had something like this and have been missing out. I had tried so many things over decades to cure my lack of self-confidence and master my fear enough to get into the significant, focused actions that make dreams come true.

Thanks for this spellbinding blog post! It was a good time for me to read it.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” How is it that this fact is known since thousands of years, and we all still have to struggle to get our words right in our daily life?! Thank you Shirley for this great post which sounds like a wholesome wakeup call, just in time for the startup of the new MKE session!
SUCH an excellent comment, Luc…I really appreciate thinking of that Scripture in the context of what I wrote about “spelling.” The ultimate power of THE WORD. WOW.
