Boldly Taking Steps Forward on the Hero’s Journey

Read more posts by  Drem Bruinsma

On May 7th I went on a road trip all around the province and its northern border regions, searching for a rental place in a calm natural setting, away from urban sprawl and densely populated areas.

This undertaking was fueled by the conviction that my current living conditions are less than favorable for becoming and operating as an MKE apprentice guide. I wish to give all my attention to the upcoming subscribed members for 2025-26 edition of MKE, and their dharma, their DMP.

Now that I am back after 8 days at the place I needed to escape from, I notice that I can handle adverse circumstances better.

Physically taking steps forward

I know what is out there, at just half a day’s drive up northwest: the empty and untouched landscapes where I find my peace, myself, where I hear my internal voice and where I reconnect with the forces of nature.

All this is now internalized and this vivid memory serves as a buffer in my daily battles with pain, new medication, life at a shelter and being around inhabitants who are suffering.

I now can keep focus on where I want to go, where I want to be at age 64, without being drawn into a vortex of limitations and the claustrophobia of being in a confined space that’s run on strict rules.

Mentally taking bold steps

I don’t need to be controlled. I want to be in the driver’s seat, while on the road looking for that place to call home, even if it’s temporary. I notice these days a shift of perspective, how I perceive this city.

Now I better understand its geographical role in this province, with far-reaching influence on the entire region.

I notice clearly the concentration of services and authorities that have long arms, serving a population way beyond the city limits, in a historical perspective.

I notice how trade and religion played a determining role in the city’s growth and influence: this year, Murcia celebrates its 1200-year history!

Daily taking steps forward

The shelter is an environment where individuals are gathered, some by making a number of wrong turns in their lives. Some have been born under an unfortunate star, with serious health issues.

They were born in a country that doesn’t always have the resources to help. They are persons who escaped some other dead-end situation and who fled, landing here and finding themselves without legal status here.

The shelter provides assistance, so they can make use of the Spanish public health system. That can means long processes, negotiations and procedures, and for some, ultimately help.

Finding a quiet home in a natural setting has been one of my early PPN’s, set for on or before May 15th 2025, and I found a decent rental in a nice, reasonably well-connected village. A pity that the landlady backed off at the last moment, seeking a different lodger-profile.

Determination and drive to take more bold steps

But at least I worked on manifesting what I consider conditional: to be able to concentrate on becoming a guide for the upcoming 2025-26 course, in a quiet, natural environment and with the required space and privacy to keep my own schedule, without interference of living in a communal setting, which is my current environment.

“I hold on to this preliminary goal to find an alternative, no matter how difficult this can be.”

Now I have examined the situation upstate and seen possibility, nothing will break my determination. Even after I have seen so many obstacles: small towns in agricultural areas rented out to workers in the fields, or people living in greenhouses suffering the beating sun during summer months. Six sharing a flat is common.

In the smaller villages in or near mountain regions, most seemingly abandoned houses are actually property of city dwellers who plan to retire there, in milder climatological conditions during the summer heat on the coastal flats, or who do business putting these properties up for sale.

It’s a necessary step towards my dharma, to reach my DMP, which still stands unchanged, which at the moment I still consider as my deepest desire, even during shifting, unstable times.
