A Legacy of Faith and Purpose

Joan of Arc’s life is one of the most extraordinary tales in history.

Joan was born around 1412 in Domrémy, France, and grew up in a simple farming family. But her life took a miraculous turn when, at 13, she began hearing divine voices.

These voices, which she believed came from saints like Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, told her she had a sacred mission: to help Charles VII become King and save France from English control during the Hundred Years’ War.

Joan had a mission to save France and a mastermind of Saints to help.

A Mission Against All Odds

Joan faced immense challenges from the start. As a young peasant girl, convincing leaders to listen to her was nearly impossible. Yet, Joan’s faith and determination carried her forward. She acted.

Joan of Arc was 17 when she traveled to meet Charles VII, the uncrowned King of France and pleaded her case. Her mission was extraordinary for someone so young, especially considering her humble background as a peasant girl.

Desperate for a turning point, Joan believed her duty was to convince him to act. At the time, Charles had not yet been crowned and was in a precarious position, with much of France under English or Burgundian control.

Joan initially approached local officials to gain access to Charles. The local officials were skeptical. However, her persistence paid off.

When she finally stood in front of Charles, she told him about a secret prayer he had made. A divine revelation is the only way Joan could have known this prayer. These details convinced Charles that Joan was indeed on a sacred mission.

Moved by her conviction, Charles allowed her to lead a small force to Orléans, where she achieved a miraculous victory. This meeting was pivotal in Joan’s life and French history, marking the beginning of her rise as a national heroine.

He entrusted her with an army — a bold decision at a time when women were not allowed to lead in war. But Joan wasn’t just any leader; she knew God was guiding her every step.

Leading an Army to Victory

Joan’s first major test came at the Siege of Orléans in 1429. Clad in armor and carrying her banner, she inspired the French troops, who were weary after years of war.

Under her leadership, they achieved a decisive victory, a turning point in the war. Joan’s courage, faith and purpose lifted the spirits of her soldiers and gave hope to the entire nation.

Her success didn’t stop there. Joan led Charles VII to Reims, where he became King. For Joan, this was a moment of triumph. She fulfilled her divine mission of defending France during the Hundred Years’ War.

Betrayal and Sacrifice

Despite her accomplishments, Joan’s journey ended in tragedy. In 1430, the Burgundians, allies of the English, captured her. They sold her to the English, who wanted to discredit her and dampen French morale.

Joan was put on trial for heresy and accused of everything from claiming to hear divine voices to wearing men’s clothing.

The trial was unfair and politically motivated, but Joan stood firm in her faith. Her eloquence and bravery during the trial left a lasting impression on those who witnessed it.

Sadly, she was found guilty and burned at the stake in 1431, becoming a martyr at just 19 years old.

A Legacy of Sainthood

In 1456, a retrial cleared her of all charges. Joan’s devotion to God, extraordinary accomplishments, and ultimate sacrifice made her an enduring symbol of faith and integrity.

Centuries later, in 1920, the Catholic Church canonized her as a saint, honoring her unwavering faith and extraordinary life.

Today, Joan of Arc is a national heroine of France and a symbol of courage, perseverance, faith and purpose. Her story inspires people worldwide to stand firm in their beliefs and overcome challenges, no matter how impossible they may seem.

Joan’s life teaches us that with a definite purpose, a plan, faith and purpose, determination, and courage, we can achieve extraordinarily, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
