The Watchman at the Gate
Have you ever felt like life is just a series of red lights—stop and go, stop and go?
You’re driving along, full of plans and momentum, and suddenly the light turns red.
You’re forced to wait. Sometimes those pauses feel endless, don’t they?
The Watchman and the Master Key Experience
Since becoming a guide for the Master Key Experience, I’ve started to see those red lights in a whole new way. One of the lessons we learn is to become an observer—a “watchman at the gate” of our own minds.
That means paying attention to what we’re thinking, how we’re feeling, and what we’re allowing into our subconscious.

It’s about noticing the small things:
The tone we use when we talk to ourselves.
How we react when someone irritates us.
The warmth we feel sharing a moment with a child.
Or the peace of five quiet minutes with a cup of coffee.
When we observe life instead of rushing through it, we begin to see meaning in every moment—whether we’re moving or standing still.
The Watchman with Red Circles
In another Master Key exercise, we look for red circles—symbols we spot in our environment and link to a simple chore, like cleaning the car or sweeping the kitchen. When I started doing this as a guide, something clicked.
I found red circles everywhere, and as I linked them to small actions, I felt a kind of energy—almost like my body was alive with awareness. It was as if my mind and spirit were lighting up together.
The Watchman as a Guide
Last year, as a member, I loved the Master Key Experience. But now, as a guide, I’m experiencing it on a whole new level. I’ve realized that I don’t have to rush through life waiting for the next green light. I can be happy even in the “stop” moments—because they, too, are part of the journey.
Here is a short blog post by one of the new members of the Master Key Experience.
So now, when life pauses, I don’t get frustrated. I breathe, I observe, and I feel grateful. The green lights always come—at just the right time.
And in the meantime, I’m learning to enjoy the stop.

Yes, those red circles are good reminders to stop and pay attention, and to be a good watchman of our thoughts!
Thank you Arlene. Loving Red circles.
Karen, I so enjoyed this, especially when you said “I don’t have to rush through life waiting for the next green light. I can be happy even in the “stop” moments—because they, too, are part of the journey.” I, too, have found learning–really learning–to be the observer pays off in lots of ways as we deepen our practice. Thanks for all the great reminders.
