Watchman at the Gate

What is the watchman at the gate?

This week has been full of opportunities for me to make sure that my subby is GUARDED from all the garbage trying to breakdown the foundation to that old shoddy blueprint.

Again and again I have caught myself, that thought process is not going to make anything better at all. How can we spin that a little more positively?

My girlfriend posted on Facebook the other day a meme post that said, “I’ve seen a video of a mom saying she doesn’t hit or yell at her child because she thinks about the future and if she hits and yells at her because she ‘loves her and wants to correct her behaviour’ then what will she tolerate from a partner?”

I replied with I think the hitting is easy to see and understand, but the yelling is easy to overlook. It is so easy to stop your kid or yourself from saying “I’m so dumb.” You aren’t dumb, you made a bad choice….but I can’t do this, this is to much to handle, I’m exhausted, I’m angry, I’m done, I’m so mad…are these not JUST as poisonous to our Dharma and self confidence as saying “I am dumb”?

It is often true that conditions of fear, worry, poverty, disease, inharmony and evils of all kinds dominate us by reason of false suggestions accepted by the unguarded subconscious mind. All this the trained conscious mind can entirely prevent by its vigilant protective action. It may properly be called ‘the watchman at the gate’ of the great subconscious domain.

Charles Haanel, The Master Key System, Part 2:14

They dominate us with reasons of false suggestions…Things that are NOT true!!! That are not whole or perfect. But only when the conscious mind is not vigilant. He continues in Part 2 saying:

“The Conscious Mind ought to be on duty during every waking hour. When the ‘watchman’ is ‘off-guard’, or when its calm judgment is suspended, under a variety of circumstances, then the subconscious mind is unguarded and left open to suggestion from all sources. During the wild excitement of panic, or during the height of anger, or the impulses of the irresponsible mob, or at any other time of unrestricted passion, the conditions are most dangerous. The subconscious mind is then open to the suggestions of fear, hatred, selfishness, greed, self-depreciation and other negative forces, derived from surrounding persons or circumstances. The result is usually unwholesome in the extreme, with efforts that may endure to distress it for a long time. Hence, the great importance of guarding the subconscious mind from false impressions.”

Charles Haanel, The Master Key System, Part 2:18

The wild excitement of panic, or height of anger… always bad ones, but what about the height of passion? Man all of these are highly vulnerable emotions, and it is so easy for the watchman to take a seat for a rest.

The Watchman is Key

However, this is the WORST time for him to nap. In the height of emotion or the richness of passion, we are mislead and see things in a different light. We may not be the observer that we should be. This is when the fear and hatred slip in seemingly “unnoticed.” This is when the self-depreciation starts to climb and become overwhelming.

Our conscious mind is literally the one safety net we have to our brain, he holds the keys to the storehouse of fabric that our new reality is being created from.

Further in Part 2, Haanel states:

Someone may ask: ‘How can the subconscious change conditions?’ the reply is, because the subconscious is a part of the Universal Mind and a part must be the same in kind and quality as the whole; the only difference is one of degree. The whole, as we know, is creative, in fact, it is the only creator there is, consequently, we find that mind is creative, and as thought is the only activity which the mind possesses, thought must necessarily be creative also.

Charles Haanel, The Master Key System, Part 2:27

You think your coworker, or that guy you know has a Midas touch? Na man, he has just learned to tap into the the Universal Mind, and to guard that Watchman more than anything else.

They have no more power than you do. They have just learned to use the power to their benefit, instead of handing it over to someone else to control them with. This week has kept me being the vigilant watchman over every little thought trying to slip in, trying to break me down, and instill that old blueprint again. No way, No More!!!

I fully realize that no wealth or position can long endure, unless build upon TRUTH and JUSTICE, therefore, I will engage in no transaction which does not benefit all whom it affects. I will succeed by attracting to myself the forces I wish to use, and the co-operation of other people. I will induce others to serve me, because of my willingness to serve others. I will eliminate Hatred, Envy, Jealousy, Selfishness, and Cynicism by developing love for all humanity, because I know that a Negative attitude towards others can never bring me Success.

Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich, Point 5 Self Confidence Formula

Did that person really wrong you that badly? Is that grudge for the last five years really worth the destruction on your soul? your mind? your future and happiness?

Guard every thought that slips in, every impressionable word and phrase. This is MY new reality!!!! I don’t want chunks of rebar sticking willy nilly out of my foundation, I want a SOLID firm ground that is built on truth, justice and strength.

Keep taking those steps forward. Keep your Watchman at the Gate on ever present watch.
